A regular direct deposit has to be available in your account by 9:00 a.m. your bank’s local time on the settlement date. That is a Nacha rule in force since September 18, 2026. Direct deposit does not settle on a Federal Reserve holiday or a weekend. If payday is Friday, December 25, 2026 (Christmas Day) or Friday, January 1, 2027 (New Year’s Day), your pay arrives on a business day before or after it, depending on what your employer does.
The day before is common but not automatic. Nacha describes the industry practice as paying on the prior Friday. Some payroll providers pay on the next banking day unless payroll is run a day early. Check your employer’s holiday pay schedule.
What time does direct deposit hit?
For a standard direct deposit, the Nacha Operating Rules require the receiving bank to make the money available “no later than 9:00 a.m. (RDFI’s local time) on the Settlement Date.” The RDFI is your bank. So with a Friday payday, the money should be usable by 9:00 a.m. Friday in your bank’s time zone.
Nacha notes that employees “may notice their Direct Deposits show as available before payday.” Such early availability is not part of the Federal Reserve or Nacha timetable. Nacha explains that some banks and credit unions “may advance their own funds to the employee before settlement actually occurs” (Nacha). Early direct deposit features are bank-specific: whether you get one, how early, and whether it applies on a holiday week is set by your bank’s account terms.
How long does direct deposit take?
Direct deposit is an ACH credit. The employer, or its payroll provider, sends the payroll file ahead of payday, and the banks settle it on the pay date. FedACH settles next-day files at 8:30 a.m. ET on business days (FedACH schedule). The time that matters most is the employer’s deadline with its payroll provider, which is earlier and differs between providers. If the file reaches the banks on time, the money settles on the pay date; a holiday or weekend in between pushes settlement to the next business day, which you can count with our business days calculator. The full timing, including Same Day ACH, is in our guide to ACH processing times.
Will direct deposit go through on a holiday?
Not on a Federal Reserve holiday. FedACH processing stops for the holiday: for Christmas Day 2026, it ends at 11:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, December 24 and resumes at 5:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, December 27, according to the Federal Reserve Financial Services holiday schedule. A deposit dated December 25 can settle on Thursday, December 24 if the employer pays early, or on Monday, December 28.
The Saturday rule works in your favor. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, the Reserve Banks open on the Friday before, so direct deposits settle that Friday as usual. In 2027 that applies to Friday, June 18 (Juneteenth), Friday, December 24 (Christmas Day) and Friday, December 31 (New Year’s Day 2028). Federal offices are closed on those Fridays, but a payday on any of them is a normal settlement day.

Payroll: what employers usually do
Nacha’s description of common practice is that “Paydays that otherwise would be on a weekend or holiday are paid on the prior Friday.” Employers may follow that practice or pay on the next business day. The answer for your paycheck comes from your employer or HR.
Two practical points for payroll staff:
- A holiday before payday also counts. Payroll providers set file deadlines before payday, so a holiday in the days before payday can move that deadline earlier. Your payroll provider sets the exact deadline. A Friday, November 27, 2026 payday comes right after Thanksgiving, so the file deadline moves up.
- Check the provider’s own cut-off. Deadlines are set in days before the pay date and differ by provider and plan.

Frequently asked questions
Is December 28, 2026 a bank holiday?
No. Monday, December 28, 2026 is a regular Federal Reserve business day. It is the first day after Christmas on which a direct deposit can settle, so pay dated Christmas Day lands that Monday if your employer does not pay early. See our Christmas bank holiday guide.
Why has my direct deposit not hit yet?
Check three things. Is today a weekend or Federal Reserve holiday? Our are banks open today page shows that. Is it before 9:00 a.m. your bank’s local time on payday? Before then the bank is not yet late under the Nacha rule. Did your employer send the payroll file on time? Your pay stub or HR can confirm the pay date. If the money is still missing after 9:00 a.m. on a business day, contact your bank, then your employer.
Why do I get paid on Thursday?
Some employers pay on Thursday every week. Others move a Friday payday to Thursday when Friday is a Federal Reserve holiday, as with Friday, December 25, 2026 and Friday, January 1, 2027. Your employer’s pay calendar tells you which applies.
