Some banks keep selected branches open on Saturday, and some branches also open on Sunday; whether yours does is up to your bank, and its branch locator shows the current hours. For ACH and wire payments the answer does not depend on your bank: Saturday and Sunday are not business days for the Federal Reserve, so ACH payments and wire transfers sent over the weekend settle on the next business day, normally Monday, or Tuesday when Monday is a holiday.
Finding banks that are open on Saturdays
Weekend hours are set branch by branch. A bank can open some locations on Saturday and keep others closed, and it can change those hours at any time. That is why we do not publish a list of banks open Saturday: a list would be out of date for some branches as soon as it was written. Our page on bank hours explains how branch hours and holiday hours work during the week.
Are banks open on Saturdays near you? The reliable way to check:
- Use the branch locator on your bank’s website or in its app, pick the branch, and look at the Saturday and Sunday lines. Drive-up and lobby hours can differ.
- If you need a service that takes staff time, such as opening an account, a cashier’s check or a safe deposit box, call ahead. A branch that is open on Saturday may not offer every service then.
- If you only need cash or a deposit, an ATM may do the job without a branch visit (see below).
Does Saturday count as a business day?
For banking purposes, no. Three federal sources agree:
- The Fedwire Funds Service treats “all Saturdays, all Sundays” and the Reserve Banks’ holidays as non-business days, according to its operating hours.
- The Reserve Banks’ ACH operating circular lists all Saturdays and all Sundays among the days that are not FedACH banking days.
- Regulation CC, which governs when deposited funds must be available, defines a business day as a calendar day other than a Saturday, a Sunday or a listed holiday. Its official commentary adds that a bank open on Saturday does not make Saturday a banking day under the regulation, “because Saturday is never a business day under the regulation.”
Outside banking, “business day” can mean something else. A contract, a lease or a shipping promise may use its own definition. Our guide to what a business day is explains the common versions, and the business days calculator counts them with weekends and Federal Reserve holidays excluded.
What happens to payments over the weekend
ACH transfers and bill payments. FedACH settles regular payments at 8:30 a.m. ET on a business day, according to its processing schedule. A transfer to another bank that you start on Saturday is sent on with the next business day’s processing. FedACH does run an evening window on Sundays: its 8:00 p.m. ET deadline and 10:00 p.m. ET distribution take place Sunday through Thursday, so banks can receive Monday’s files on Sunday night. The money still settles on Monday. More on timing is in our ACH guide.
Wire transfers. Fedwire’s business day opens at 9:00 p.m. ET on the evening before and closes at 7:00 p.m. ET, with no business day on Saturday or Sunday. A wire you request on a Saturday is sent on Monday, or later if Monday is a holiday. Your bank sets its own cut-off for customer wire requests, which can be earlier than the Fedwire close; see our wire transfer guide.
Direct deposit. When payday falls on a weekend, the employer or payroll provider decides whether to pay on the Friday before or the Monday after. The Federal Reserve schedule only decides that the payment cannot settle on Saturday or Sunday. Our direct deposit guide covers how payroll handles this.
Deposits at an ATM or by mobile app. Under the Regulation CC commentary, a deposit made at an ATM on a Saturday, Sunday or other day the bank is closed to the public is treated as received on the bank’s next banking day. The funds availability clock starts from that day.
Instant payments. The FedNow Service has a 24-hour business day every day of the week, including weekends. If both banks offer it, an instant transfer can arrive on a Saturday or Sunday.
When a holiday falls on a weekend
Federal holidays tied to a fixed date can land on a Saturday or Sunday, and the Federal Reserve handles the two days differently. Its holiday schedule says:
- Sunday holiday: the Reserve Banks close on the following Monday. Independence Day 2027 falls on Sunday, July 4, so Monday, July 5, 2027 is a closure day for ACH and wires.
- Saturday holiday: the Reserve Banks stay open on the Friday before, and only the Board of Governors closes. Independence Day 2026 fell on Saturday, July 4, so payments settled as usual on Friday, July 3, 2026. The same applies to Friday, June 18 and Friday, December 24, 2027.
Federal offices follow a different rule and close on that Friday, so a Saturday holiday can look like a bank holiday on the calendar without being one for payments. Our page on Federal Reserve holidays explains the rules in full.
A Monday holiday after a weekend creates three days in a row without ACH or wire settlement. Over Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2027, for example, no ACH or wire payment settles from Saturday, January 16 through Monday, January 18; the next business day is Tuesday, January 19.
Frequently asked questions
Is Saturday a bank holiday?
No. Saturday is a regular non-business day, not a holiday. The difference matters when a holiday itself falls on a Saturday: the Reserve Banks then stay open on the Friday before, as described above.
Are banks open on Sunday?
Some branches open on Sunday, but the hours vary by bank and branch. Your bank’s branch locator shows whether a branch near you opens on Sunday. Payments do not settle on Sunday either; they go through on the next business day, normally Monday.
Can funds clear on a Saturday?
Not through ACH or Fedwire, which do not settle on weekends. A deposit made on Saturday can be treated as received on the next banking day, usually Monday. Instant payments through FedNow can arrive on a Saturday if both banks offer the service.
