Veterans Day is a Federal Reserve holiday, so the Reserve Banks are closed and ACH payments, direct deposits and Fedwire transfers don’t settle that day. The Reserve Banks next close for it on Wednesday, November 11, 2026. Whether your local branch opens is your bank’s decision, not the Federal Reserve’s, so check your bank’s holiday notice before you go. Two exceptions are coming up: in 2028 the holiday falls on a Saturday, and in 2029 on a Sunday (details below).
Are Banks Closed on Veterans Day?
The Federal Reserve is closed on Veterans Day, next on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, so ACH and wires don't settle. Branch hours vary by bank.

Is Veterans Day a bank holiday?
Yes, for payments. Federal law lists “Veterans Day, November 11” among the legal public holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103, and the Federal Reserve’s holiday schedule closes the Reserve Banks on it. Unlike Columbus Day or Thanksgiving, Veterans Day is tied to a date, not a weekday. It often lands midweek and splits the week rather than creating a long weekend.
The Federal Reserve schedule does not set branch hours. Each bank decides whether its branches and phone lines open on the holiday, so the reliable answer for your branch is your bank’s own notice. Online banking, ATMs and card payments are run by banks and card networks, not the Federal Reserve, so the Fed holiday does not switch them off.
When Veterans Day falls on a weekend: 2028 and 2029
This is where the Federal Reserve and the federal government part ways.
- 2028: Saturday, November 11. The federal government observes the holiday on Friday, November 10, 2028, so federal offices are closed, according to OPM. The Reserve Banks are open that Friday; only the Board of Governors in Washington closes, as the Federal Reserve’s schedule notes. ACH and Fedwire payments settle normally on November 10, 2028.
- 2029: Sunday, November 11. Both the Federal Reserve and federal offices close on Monday, November 12, 2029. No ACH or Fedwire settlement that Monday.
So a list that shows Friday, November 10, 2028 as a bank holiday is showing the federal government’s schedule, not the days payments settle. The check rules follow the same logic: Regulation CC says that if November 11 falls on a Sunday, the next Monday is not a business day, and it has no matching rule for a Saturday holiday.
In 2030 the holiday is on Monday, November 11, a regular closure. The 2031 and 2032 dates (Tuesday and Thursday) are calculated from the statutory rule, because the Federal Reserve has not published those years yet. The full Federal Reserve rules for weekend holidays are on our Federal Reserve holidays page.
What happens to payments on Veterans Day
- ACH and direct deposit: No FedACH settlement on the holiday. For 2026, Federal Reserve Financial Services lists FedACH processing as ending at 11:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday, November 10 and resuming at 5:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, November 11, according to its holiday schedule page. Payments resume settling on Thursday, November 12. More on ACH around holidays.
- Wire transfers: Fedwire treats Federal Reserve holidays like weekends, so a wire requested on the holiday goes out on the next business day. See wire transfers.
- Checks: If Veterans Day is not a banking day for your bank, Regulation CC lets it treat a check deposited that day as received on the next banking day.
- ATMs and mobile: These usually work as normal. When a deposit made that day is credited depends on your bank’s cut-off times.
- Instant payments: The FedNow Service runs every day of the week, including holidays. A FedNow transfer can arrive on Veterans Day if both banks offer it. See instant payments.
Will my direct deposit be delayed by Veterans Day?
Only if your pay date falls on the holiday itself. In 2026 that means a Wednesday, November 11 pay date. A direct deposit is an ACH credit, and it can’t settle on a Federal Reserve holiday, so the employer has to pick another day: Tuesday, November 10 or Thursday, November 12. Which one is your employer’s or payroll provider’s choice, not a Federal Reserve rule. Deposits dated any other day of that week are not affected. Once a regular ACH credit does settle, the Nacha Operating Rules require the receiving bank to make it available by 9:00 a.m. its local time on the settlement date (in effect since September 18, 2026). Our direct deposit page covers payroll timing in more detail.
Frequently asked questions
Who gets Veterans Day off?
Federal employees: Veterans Day is one of the legal public holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103, and OPM lists it on the federal holiday schedule. The Federal Reserve Banks close too, and the U.S. Postal Service lists Veterans Day among its postal holidays, the days its holiday page describes as having no mail service. Private employers and schools set their own schedules.
Is the stock market open on Veterans Day?
Yes. Veterans Day is not on the NYSE Group holiday calendar for 2026 to 2028, so stocks trade while the Federal Reserve is closed. Bond trading follows a different calendar: SIFMA, whose holiday recommendations apply to trading in US government securities, lists Wednesday, November 11, 2026 as a holiday.
Are banks closed on Veterans Day, or just the Federal Reserve?
A bank can choose to open its branches, since the Federal Reserve schedule doesn’t set branch hours. Even then, payments to other banks by ACH or Fedwire wait for the next business day. To check the day itself, see are banks open today.
