A federal holiday since 2021

Juneteenth National Independence Day became the newest federal holiday when the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act was approved on June 17, 2021 as Public Law 117-17. It added “Juneteenth National Independence Day, June 19” to the list of legal public holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103. The Federal Reserve lists it on its holiday schedule as Juneteenth National Independence Day.

Because the holiday is tied to a calendar date, it moves through the week from year to year, and it sometimes lands on a weekend.

June 18, 2027 and June 18, 2032: Fed open, federal offices closed

When a holiday falls on a Saturday, the Federal Reserve and the federal government handle the Friday before differently:

  • Federal government: the Friday is the observed holiday for pay and leave, according to OPM. OPM lists Friday, June 18, 2027 as Juneteenth National Independence Day.
  • Federal Reserve: the Reserve Banks and branches are open the preceding Friday, and the Board of Governors in Washington closes, according to the Fed’s schedule. For June 18, 2027 that means a regular business day for FedACH and Fedwire.

The same split comes back on Friday, June 18, 2032, when June 19 is again a Saturday. The 2032 dates are calculated from the statutory rule; the Federal Reserve has published its schedule through 2030.

What about 2027? A calendar that marks June 18, 2027 as a bank holiday is showing the federal government’s schedule; payments between banks settle that day. Whether your branch opens is your bank’s decision. The stock market also closes: the NYSE lists Friday, June 18, 2027 as its observed Juneteenth holiday in its 2026 to 2028 calendar.

Upcoming Juneteenth dates

From the Federal Reserve’s published schedule:

  • Friday, June 18, 2027: Reserve Banks open (June 19 is a Saturday); federal offices closed.
  • Monday, June 19, 2028: Reserve Banks and federal offices closed, creating a three-day weekend.
  • Tuesday, June 19, 2029 and Wednesday, June 19, 2030: closed midweek.

Calculated from the statutory rule: Thursday, June 19, 2031 (closed) and Friday, June 18, 2032 (Reserve Banks open, federal offices closed). The Federal Reserve holidays page explains the weekend rules for every holiday.

What happens to payments on Juneteenth

On a weekday Juneteenth, such as Monday, June 19, 2028:

  • ACH and direct deposit: FedACH does not settle. For Juneteenth 2026 (a Friday), Federal Reserve Financial Services’ holiday schedule showed processing ending at 11:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, June 18 and resuming at 5:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 21, ahead of Monday settlement. A direct deposit due on the holiday has to settle a business day earlier or later; see direct deposit.
  • Wires: The Fedwire Funds Service is closed on Federal Reserve holidays. Banks set their own wire cut-offs for the day before. More on wire transfers.
  • Checks: A deposit made on a day that is not a banking day for your bank may be treated as deposited on the next banking day under Regulation CC.
  • ATMs, cards and mobile apps: run by banks and card networks, so a Federal Reserve holiday does not switch them off.
  • FedNow: the FedNow Service runs every day, including holidays, so an instant transfer can arrive if both banks offer it.

On June 18, 2027 and June 18, 2032 none of these restrictions apply, because the Reserve Banks are open. The ACH page has the regular settlement times.
