What makes the 2028 bank holidays different
New Year’s Day 2028 is observed in 2027
January 1, 2028 is a Saturday. The federal government moves a Saturday holiday to the Friday before, as the Office of Personnel Management explains, and OPM’s 2028 table lists New Year’s Day on Friday, December 31, 2027. The Federal Reserve does not move it. Its schedule says that for a Saturday holiday the Reserve Banks and branches are open the preceding Friday and only the Board of Governors is closed; a footnote names December 31, 2027 as that day. The Federal Reserve corrected this footnote on July 8, 2026, from December 31, 2028 to December 31, 2027.
The result: the Reserve Banks have no New Year’s closure at all for 2028. December 31, 2027 is a normal settlement day, and the first business day of 2028 is Monday, January 3. The NYSE also observes no New Year’s Day holiday in 2028, according to the NYSE Group holiday calendar for 2026 to 2028.
Veterans Day falls on a Saturday
November 11, 2028 is also a Saturday (see Veterans Day). Federal offices close on Friday, November 10; the Reserve Banks are open and payments settle. The NYSE does not observe Veterans Day, so it is open too.
No Sunday holidays; Juneteenth and Christmas on a Monday
No 2028 holiday falls on a Sunday, so no observed Monday closure is added. Juneteenth (Monday, June 19) and Christmas Day (Monday, December 25) happen to fall on a Monday, which turns both into three-day weekends. Independence Day is a Tuesday, July 4; Monday, July 3 is a regular business day for the Reserve Banks, while the NYSE closes early that day, at 1:00 p.m. ET.
