Federal Reserve holiday calendar

US Bank Holidays 2027

In 2027 the Federal Reserve closes on 9 weekdays, from January 1 to November 25. That leaves 252 business days for ACH and wire transfers. 3 holidays fall on a weekend this year.

The Federal Reserve observes 11 holidays in 2027. The two that fall on a Saturday, Juneteenth (June 19) and Christmas Day (December 25), do not close the Reserve Banks on a weekday: Friday, June 18 and Friday, December 24 are regular banking days for ACH and wire payments, although federal offices are closed. Independence Day falls on a Sunday, so the Federal Reserve and federal offices both close on Monday, July 5.

If another list of bank holidays 2027 shows June 18 and December 24 as days off, it is showing the federal government’s schedule, not the days on which payments settle.

What makes the 2027 bank holidays different

Three of the 2027 holidays fall on a weekend, and that is where the Federal Reserve and the federal government follow different rules.

The federal government moves a Saturday holiday to the Friday before and a Sunday holiday to the Monday after, as the Office of Personnel Management explains. The Federal Reserve moves only the Sunday holidays. For a Saturday holiday, its published holiday schedule says the Reserve Banks and branches are open on the preceding Friday. Only the Board of Governors in Washington closes that day.

In 2027 this applies to three Fridays:

  • Friday, June 18 (Juneteenth observed): federal offices are closed, the Reserve Banks are open, and ACH and Fedwire payments settle as usual.
  • Friday, December 24 (Christmas Day observed): the same split.
  • Friday, December 31 (New Year’s Day 2028 observed, because January 1, 2028 is a Saturday): federal offices are closed, the Reserve Banks are open.

December 31 is easy to miss because it belongs to the 2028 holiday. OPM lists it in its 2028 table, and the Federal Reserve mentions it in a footnote. Counted by calendar year, federal employees have 12 weekday holidays in 2027, while the Reserve Banks close on nine.

The stock market follows a third schedule. According to the NYSE Group holiday calendar for 2026 to 2028, the NYSE is closed on Friday, June 18 and Friday, December 24, 2027, but open on December 31. It also closes on Good Friday, March 26, which is not a Federal Reserve holiday. “The markets are closed” and “the banks are closed” therefore point to different days in 2027.

Holidays on a weekend in 2027

The Federal Reserve and the federal government handle weekend holidays differently. This is where banks and government offices can be on a different schedule.

Weekend holidays in 2027: Federal Reserve and federal government
Holiday Falls on Federal Reserve Federal government
Juneteenth Open on Friday, June 18 (no weekday closure) Closed Friday, June 18
Independence Day Closed Monday, July 5 Closed Monday, July 5
Christmas Day Open on Friday, December 24 (no weekday closure) Closed Friday, December 24

Are banks open on the 2027 bank holidays?

The Federal Reserve schedule tells you when payments between banks settle. It does not set branch hours. Each bank decides whether its branches and phone lines open on a holiday, and hours can differ from bank to bank. Check your own bank’s holiday notice before you plan a branch visit; our page on bank holiday hours explains what to look for.

What the Federal Reserve schedule does decide is whether money can move between banks:

  • On the nine closure days, such as Monday, July 5, FedACH and Fedwire do not process payments. A branch that is open can still take your deposit, but a payment to another bank through these systems waits for a business day.
  • On June 18, December 24 and December 31, the Reserve Banks are open. ACH and wire payments can settle as on any other weekday, whatever your branch’s hours are.
  • ATMs, debit cards and mobile apps are run by banks and card networks rather than the Federal Reserve, so a Federal Reserve holiday does not switch them off. When a deposit made that day is credited depends on your bank’s own cut-off times and funds availability policy.

Instant payments work differently. The Federal Reserve’s FedNow Service has a 24-hour business day every day of the week, including weekends and holidays. A transfer between two banks that both offer FedNow can arrive on a holiday. Whether you can use it depends on your bank.

Bank holidays 2027: what changes for ACH, direct deposit and wires

ACH payments, including direct deposits, and Fedwire transfers do not settle on the nine Federal Reserve closure days. A payment that would fall on one of those days settles on a business day before or after it. The deadlines for your own payment are set by your bank or payroll provider, so check theirs; the times below are the Federal Reserve’s.

ACH transfers and direct deposit

More detail, with worked examples, is on our pages about ACH processing and direct deposit.

FedACH settles regular next-day and future-dated payments at 8:30 a.m. ET on a business day, and same-day ACH at 1:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. ET, according to the FedACH processing schedule. None of these settlements take place on a Federal Reserve holiday.

For each holiday, Federal Reserve Financial Services also publishes when FedACH processing stops before it and resumes after it. On October 22, 2026, its holiday schedule page listed these windows for 2026 only. We will add the 2027 windows to this page once they are published.

A direct deposit is an ACH credit. Since September 18, 2026, the Nacha Operating Rules require the receiving bank to make a regular (not same-day) ACH credit available by 9:00 a.m. its local time on the settlement date. A direct deposit dated Friday, December 24, 2027 can settle that day, because the Reserve Banks are open. One dated Monday, July 5 cannot.

Fedwire payments

The Fedwire Funds Service treats every Saturday, Sunday and Federal Reserve holiday as a non-business day. On business days it opens at 9:00 p.m. ET the evening before and closes at 7:00 p.m. ET, with a 6:45 p.m. ET cut-off for customer transfers. Banks set their own, earlier cut-offs for wire requests from customers. Our wire transfers page explains how the cut-offs work.

A wire that misses the cut-off on Friday, July 2, 2027 is sent on Tuesday, July 6, because Monday, July 5 is a closure day. Wires on June 18, December 24 and December 31 go through as usual.

The Federal Reserve has announced that Fedwire Funds will add Sundays and weekday holidays as optional operating days, to be implemented in 2028 or 2029. For 2027, the holiday closures above still apply.

Payroll

The Federal Reserve schedule decides when a payroll file can settle. Your employer and payroll provider decide which day becomes payday when the regular date is a holiday, and their file deadlines come before the Federal Reserve’s.

In 2027, three common pay dates fall on a Federal Reserve closure:

  • Friday, January 1 (New Year’s Day): the only Friday payday of the year that hits a closure. June 18, December 24 and December 31 are normal settlement days.
  • Monday, February 15 (Washington’s Birthday): affects pay dates on the 15th of the month.
  • Monday, May 31 (Memorial Day): affects pay dates on the last day of the month.

Take a company that pays on the 15th and the last day of each month. Its February 15 payroll cannot settle that day. It can pay on Friday, February 12 or on Tuesday, February 16; which one is a policy choice, not a Federal Reserve rule.

Transfers between banks

Transfers between your accounts at different banks, and payments to other people’s banks, follow the ACH schedule when your bank sends them by ACH. One you request on a holiday is processed on a later business day. Transfers between two accounts at the same bank do not go through the Federal Reserve, so they may post on a holiday, depending on the bank. Instant transfers through FedNow are the other exception, as described above.

How the 2027 business-day count works

2027 has 261 weekdays. Take away the nine weekday Federal Reserve closures and 252 business days remain. That is one more than 2026 and 2028, which have 251 each by the same method.

A business day on this page is a Monday to Friday on which the Federal Reserve Banks are open. June 18, December 24 and December 31 count as business days, because a closure of the Board of Governors alone does not stop ACH or Fedwire settlement. Our business-day calculator uses the same calendar and does not count the start date.

Three examples from that calculation:

  • 5 business days after Wednesday, June 30, 2027 is Thursday, July 8. Monday, July 5 is skipped.
  • 5 business days after Monday, December 20, 2027 is Monday, December 27. Friday, December 24 counts as a business day.
  • 10 business days after Monday, January 4, 2027 is Tuesday, January 19. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 18 is skipped.

March and December have the most business days in 2027 (23 each), January and February the fewest (19 each). Because Juneteenth and Christmas Day fall on a Saturday, June and December 2027 have no weekday Federal Reserve closure at all.

Other definitions give other totals. Federal employees have 249 workdays in calendar year 2027, because their 12 weekday holidays include June 18, December 24 and December 31. A contract or loan agreement can also define “business day” by federal holidays or by its own list. Check the definition in the document before you rely on a count.

Federal Reserve closures on a Monday or Friday. ACH and Fedwire payments do not settle on the holiday, so there are three days in a row without settlement; a payment due that day settles on a business day before or after it.

Questions about the 2027 bank holidays

What holiday is January 15, 2027?

January 15 is Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, but the federal holiday falls on the third Monday of January: Monday, January 18, 2027. The Reserve Banks are open on Friday, January 15, so payments settle normally that day.

Is Good Friday a bank holiday in 2027?

No. Good Friday, March 26, 2027, is not a Federal Reserve holiday, so ACH and wire payments settle as usual. The NYSE is closed that day. Easter Monday, March 29, is not a US federal or Federal Reserve holiday, although it is a bank holiday in some other countries, such as the United Kingdom.

Are banks open on the day after Thanksgiving 2027?

Friday, November 26, 2027, is not a Federal Reserve holiday, so ACH and Fedwire run normally. Branch hours are set by each bank. The NYSE closes early that day, at 1:00 p.m. ET.

Can the 2027 holiday schedule still change?

The holidays themselves are set by federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103), and a new one needs an act of Congress, as happened with Juneteenth in 2021. The Federal Reserve can still revise details of its schedule: on July 8, 2026 it updated a footnote to list December 31, 2027 as the Board’s closure for New Year’s Day 2028.
